Alabama is the first state to charge its overweight workers a health insurance premium if they refuse to try to slim down. MSN reports today that the Alabama State Employees’ Insurance Board agreed to charge obese employees a $25 monthly premium for insurance that is otherwise free.
This is only assessed for folks living large who refuse to make an effort to change their ways. Unhealthy people have higher healthcare costs. When healthcare becomes a public issue, the personal habits and health of everyone becomes a public issue…just something to consider when we line up at the trough and demand universal healthcare.
