When it comes to wealth redistribution it’s all too easy to get caught up in the theoretical. Theoretically, social programs could benefit society. Theoretically, “the rich” can pay for them. Why not make the wealthiest 5% of the population pay for all of government? Then why not go on a spending binge with their money? This is precisely the base level to which American politics has devolved. It’s impossible to get elected into public office without promising handouts to at least a majority of the voter base. This is unconstrained democracy and the result of universal suffrage.
It is not surprising that those with the fewest resources are most adamant about increasing the tax burden of those with the most. If you can vote to take away another person’s property, why not? Well, the next time you’re in a restaurant tell the server you are not going to tip him. Tell him you will give that money to someone poorer on his behalf. You will see rather quickly how appreciative this server is of redistributing wealth when it comes out of his pocket! If everyone followed this policy we’d all soon be fetching our own food from the kitchen.
