The next time you hear a politician use the word “billion” in a casual manner, think about how you want government spending YOUR tax money.
A billion is a difficult number to comprehend, but one advertising agency did a good job of putting that figure into some perspective in one of its releases.
- A billion seconds ago it was 1959.
- A billion minutes ago Jesus was alive.
- A billion hours ago our ancestors were living in the Stone Age.
- A billion days ago no-one walked on the earth on two feet.
At the rate our government is spending it, a billion dollars ago was only 8 hours and 20 minutes ago.
According to the IRS, tax revenue brought in for 2007 was higher than any year in U.S. history. And yet, for every $1.00 the IRS brings in, government spends $1.50.
While this thought is still fresh on the brain, consider New Orleans. (It’s amazing what you can learn with some simple division.)
Louisiana Senator, Mary Landrieu (D) is presently asking Congress for $250 Billion to rebuild New Orleans. Interesting number — what does it mean?
- If you are one of the 484,674 residents of New Orleans (every man, woman, and child) you each get $516,528.
- If you have one of the 188,251 homes in New Orleans, your home gets $1,329,787.
- If you are a family of four… your family gets $2,066,012.
Perhaps Americans would vote differently if they voted with their calculators.
With a growing deficit, a new president that advocates $300 Billion in NEW federal spending next year, AND wants to give a “tax credit to 95% of the population,” consider this:
- Accounts Receivable Tax
- Building Permit Tax
- CDL License Tax
- Cigarette Tax
- Corporate Income Tax
- Dog License Tax
- Federal Income Tax
- Federal Unemployment Tax (FUTA)
- Fishing License Tax
- Food License Tax
- Fuel Permit Tax
- Gasoline Tax
- Hunting License Tax
- Inheritance Tax
- Inventory Tax
- IRS Interest Charges (tax on top of tax)
- IRS Penalties (tax on top of tax)
- Liquor Tax
- Luxury Tax
- Marriage License Tax
- Medicare Tax
- Property Tax
- Real Estate Tax
- Service charge taxes
- Social Security Tax
- Road Usage Tax (Truckers)
- Sales Taxes
- Recreational Vehicle Tax
- School Tax
- State Income Tax
- State Unemployment Tax (SUTA)
- Telephone Federal Excise Tax
- Telephone Federal Universal Service Fee Tax
- Telephone Federal, State and Local Surcharge Tax
- Telephone Minimum Usage Surcharge Tax
- Telephone Recurring and Non-recurring Charges Tax
- Telephone State and Local Tax
- Telephone Usage Charge Tax
- Utility Tax
- Vehicle License Registration Tax
- Vehicle Sales Tax
- Watercraft Registration Tax
- Well Permit Tax
- Workers Compensation Tax
Not one of these taxes existed 100 years ago, and our nation was the most prosperous in the world. We had absolutely no national debt. We had the largest middle class in the world. …and Mom stayed home to raise the kids.
What happened?

Great post! It really is ridiculous once you break it down this way. But, what does Mom staying home to raise the kids have to do with anything?
I value all of the information presented here, However I would be remiss not to point out that the America of 100 Years ago was significantly different then today. The population in 1907 was 87,008,000 compared with today’s 303,824,640. Both the GDP and the standard of living has increased tremendously during this time.
Based on the outcome of the recent presidential election, It would seem that a majority of the people prefer this version of America. In the current system and under the incoming president, Big Government will only grow. Wasteful spending of our tax dollars is not acceptable,
We should all recognize that there are big problems in this country which require Bold solutions. Trying to return to an America of 100 Years ago is not a viable solution.
I would like to say I like you view but one of your statements is not true. We have been a debtor nation for a long time way over a hundred years except for one time in the 1800s when some guy who was rich paid us out of debt. This is a historical fact that you can look up at your local library that is how I found it. I would also like to point out a hundred years ago women could not vote. Just because we did not have it then does not mean it was better. Some of these taxes are necessary to protect us or educate our youth even if it is being done poorly it is still necessary. Where do you think the money comes form to make the bombs that protects our freedom?
Can I have permission to use this tax document in my book?

@The Frugal Libertarian –
It means “moms” didn’t have to work – now they do! Why? Because of everything that is in the above post.
