An American Carol: Breaking Hollywood’s Liberal Mold

An American Carol: Breaking Hollywood’s Liberal Mold

Looking at the guest list attending Barack Obama’s Hollywood fundraiser earlier this month, and the fact that he raised $9 million from the event, would seem to corroborate the general notion that Hollywood is fairly liberal. Not being liberal makes it difficult for me to stomach anything that comes to the theater with a political theme. However, a new David Zucker film called “An American Carol” breaks the mold. It’s a rare conservative movie that makes us question the freedoms many of us take for granted. Given widespread anti-American sentiment around the world, including a general antipathy at home, this movie provides a refreshing look at “what it means to be an American in an anti-American world.”

“An American Carol” tackles a few key issues in a humorous way: healthcare in America may not be perfect, but it’s far better than in Cuba, we’re fighting Islamic terrorism for a reason, and yes, it is Islamic terrorism we’re fighting!

The film begins with its main character, a Michael Moore double, filming a documentary on the superiority of Cuban healthcare (spoof on “Sicko”). The camera rolls by long lines of “common people” waiting for care, empty lines for “Party Officials”, and dozens of heavily armed soldiers keeping everything in order. The scene culminates with a horde of Cubans fighting each other to get onto a far-too-small boat in hopes of reaching America. Moral of the segment: there’s a reason Cubans risk their lives to flee their country for ours; let’s not forget that!

The core of the story centers around Islamic jihadists plotting to attack America. The first scene with jihadists takes place in Afghanistan, where a small group of fanatics is attempting to randomly kill a crowd of people lining up to vote. Moral: let’s remember that we freed Afghanistan from a criminal regime, comprised of thugs who held their own population hostage and orchestrated the devastating assault of 9/11.

Finally, the film makes clear that we are fighting radical Islam. Regardless of how politically correct it is to say this, there are extreme elements of the religious movement that have declared unyielding, uncompromising war on the West. Our civilization is under attack and pretending we aren’t, the threat isn’t serious, or that we somehow provoked this (and thereby deserve it!) is preposterous.

For once Hollywood is telling us that we should be proud to be American, our healthcare system is better than Socialist alternatives, and we have legitimate reason to fight Islamic jihadists. Crazy, eh? I bet the cast and crew of this story weren’t on the Obama guest list!

  1. Great write-up. I’ve been seeing previews of this movie and wondering if it was any good. Did you find it funny at all? Worth taking a date to?

Nick, I didn’t think you could get a date, but if you do manage one I’d recommend An American Carol. If you like slapstick comedy and/or would like to see a rare conservative-minded movie, look no further!
